Can one of the mods take down these re-edited whitewashed pieces of crap? (Vic Flint #2) If I had wanted it whitened when I scanned and shared this book I would have done it in the first place. Further blatant promotions like this of any of my re-editied scans here and I will stop publically sharing them. Instead of encouraging these people to keep doing this they could be spending their time and money acquiring GA books that have not been scanned in any form.

The edited file has been removed at the original scanners request.

I will try to remember that before putting up any replacements. I prefer the originals but I am not a good judge so I put the edited up. I will do my best to remember not to replace any of your scans with those whitewashed ones.

dang, now all this makes me want to see a before and after of the two scans for comparison purposes.

We always need to be learning.

I scan each page as a 300 dpi tiff, and make very little corrections to the original paper, as that is how I like to view an old comic. I resize then sharpen the image to get the best representation of the original page. The re-editors just send the finished jpgs through a batch whitener.

Speaking of learning people who re-edit then reshare other people's scans need to learn some manners.

I understand and appreciate your comments. People are of course free to modify scans to their liking, for their own personal use, but sharing or posting those modified files with others is another matter. I'm not trying to excuse this behavior, but apparently some the people who have done this didn't stop to think how the original creator of those scans would feel about their changes.

Thanks for continuing to share your scans fett. Although we might not have the same exact preferences on our scans and edits, I will respect your preferences as the "admission price" of being able to share in the books you are providing.

Thanks again!

I will admit to editing others scans on occasion, usually if the scans are very large or inconsistent across pages.  That is one reason I'm reluctant to do any reposts on ABPCR unless the original scan was mine.  But I do often share scans with others by other means and accept scans from others by DCC, etc.  These scans might well be edited.  Generally speaking in those situations, the recipient would have no way of knowing the scans have been edited and might innocently pass them along again.

It occurs to me that direct communication rather than pouts and threats might be a little more productive.  I mean, legally speaking, there aren't any right to assert, so it's not like a scanner can prevent a scan from being altered (or sold, as in the traditional argument around here).

I would suggest that anybody who's touchy about this sort of thing make your feelings clear WITH THE SCAN.  Add a license-like page, explaining that you've edited the pages to your satisfaction and your preference would be for the document to only be distributed as-is; and if changes must be made, to please make it clear that subsequent work was done after it was out of your hands and/or remove anything that identifies it as yours.

This is the standard sort of thing for Open Source software licenses:  You can redistribute it, but only if you either leave it unchanged or make the changes clear and the original available.  Obviously, you can't slap a license on a public domain scan and expect anybody to pay attention to it, but you can certainly make your opinions known in a similar fashion.  I'm sure that just drawing attention to preference will prevent most people from farting around with the scan unless there's a huge defect.

It occurs to me that you, sir, are a voice of calm and reason in this forum and I applaud your common sense approach to so many threads. We're fortunate to have you and your point of view here.

Peace, Jim (|:{>

Appreciated, Jim, though my tone was incendiary, and I apologize to everybody for that.  On very little sleep (for good reasons like visiting friends), Fett's somewhat understandable ultimatum just rubbed me the wrong way.

That said, it's also understandable that people will take what's given in the spirit of sharing and, well, share.  If they assume a scanner didn't have time to whiten the page (as opposed to wanting it to look like paper, which is also my preference), they'll "help."  That's a good thing, and should be harnessed where it can be used, not screamed about in public.

I hope Fett will continue to share his scans with the general public.
It's almost impossible to know the history of each scan unless one keeps very on top of any new material available at multiple sources.  As was mentioned it might have been an innocent mistake that someone passed on re-edits without knowing.

All that said a quiet but stern suggestion -

TO ANYONE THINKING OF SHARING A RE-EDIT THEY'VE MADE - BE SURE TO GET PERMISSION FROM THE ORIGINAL SCANNER BEFORE SHARING THEM HERE.  IT'S NOT HARD TO DO AND COULD SPARE HURT FEELINGS.

Thanks to all the scanners out there who make the our hobby such a lively and enjoyable experience.  Without you the site is nothing but an empty shell.
