Not sure that Black Diamond Western #53 (Dec 1954) cover is by Terry Szenics. She was mostly an inker and  letterer. I suspect that cover is by her husband Zoltan

I've just been reading some Miss Fury (drawn by June Mills) - and it made me wonder - who would be your favourite woman comic book artist - and their strips/comics you liked best?

Because I am basically a 1940s-1950s funny animal fan, and never read superhero, teen, or romance comics, I have no knowledge of ANY female pencilers or inkers from Golden Age comics.  I've only heard of a few of the better animation cell painters.  My only knowledge of female comic book artists is Europeans from the late 1980s till now, when I have been in the business, and met them.  The only female comic artist I know of and read from that period was Marge Buell's "Little Lulu" newspaper comic strip, which bore little relationship to the later Western Publishing and Dell comic book series.  I didn't like the humour in the newspaper strip, and the artwork wasn't all that great.  I LOVED what John Stanley did with Little Lulu, bur Buell had little to do with that.

Henrieke Goorhuis, a work partner of mine at at Sanoma Uitgevers, b.v. (Dutch Disney Comics).  She is one of my favourite funny animal artists of all time.  She's still early in her career, but I feel she has the talent to become one of the best ever.  She draws Broer Konijn (Bre'r Rabbit) in a very expressive and animated style similar to Paul Murry's classic style of 1943, and she draws Donald Duck stories in her own style, which is something like Daan Jippes' and Carl Barks' style.  She also does work for Marten Toonder's Thom Poes.

Also, Wilma van den Bosch (also of Dutch Sanoma) is quite good with many of the Disney characters from their different sub-universes(from Donald Duck and Uncle Scrooge to Bre'r Rabbit, and most of the other minor characters.

Sussi Bech, who draws her own series mainly in ancient Egyptian historical period graphic novels (Nofret, Aida Nur, Dalila den Drevne, Zainab).

Silvia Ziche, who draws Donald Duck and Uncle Scrooge for Disney Italia, now run by Pannini.  She's a very good artist, but draws too much in the Cavazzano style for my taste.

I would say that I like Henrieke Goorhuis' work best, because it has the high-quality, energy, expressiveness, and feel of the 1940s funny animal comics drawn by moonlighting animators.  Her figures look like they are really alive.

One female funny animal artist that comes to mind is Etta Parks ("Red" Rabbit Comics #20, April 1951):

You've done so much amazing work on this EM - I hope at some point you will pull it altogether (on Word if necessary) stick a cover on it - call it something like Women Artists in the Golden Age - and you've got yourself a book - you could even sell it on Kindle, Lulu whatever if you wanted to.

A brief introduction and some biographical info about each artist and bingo, what a treasure chest that would be.

This book features three artist I can't find anything on.
They may be female artists.
Pat Regan, Pat King and Pat Roberts. [all signed their work]
Unless they are all pseudonyms? 3 Pats in one book looks suspicious?

Maybe Robb can enlighten us?

I remember having seen "Loop O'Day" as a kid in a few Canadian comic books in 1946 or 1947.  Maybe they were filled with stories from a US distributor, and Fox Features supplied some or all of the stories.   I think Pat Regan was a real artist.  I remember seeing that name several times.  The artwork doesn't look like the hand of any of the other stories' artists.   I've always thought Pat Regan was a man.  I may have heard him talked about as a "he".

I'd bet the farm that the "Gilbert Gorilla", "Sonny Seal" and "Buffalo Bunny" stories were drawn by Lee Sherman.  They have Sherman's style of terrible backgrounds.  The figures, although pretty crude, look pretty good compared to Sherman's usual.  But, I'm still pretty sure those 3 stories are his.

"Pop Gun Pete" looks like it might have been drawn by Ellis "Holly" Chambers.  The mountains in the background look exactly like Chambers' used a lot in his "Se

Charlotte Becker, apparently the same Charlotte Becker that painted a lot of baby art (Funny Book #6, Winter 1943):

Trina Robbins' The Flapper Queens looks good and has already received a stonkingly positive review:

Trina of course needs no introduction and is to be heartily thanked for restoring to us the sublime Honey West (full TV series available on DVD from usual outlets:

GCD seems to have since credited her as only the writer and not artist. Not sure who did the art otherwise though.

Mickey Klar Marks was a prolific children's and young and pre-teen girls' story writer for traditional children's books, comic books and magazines, and, she even wrote a few scripts for cartoons produced by Famous Studios.  She wrote stories for many, diverse comic book publishers, especially Novelty Press' "Frisky Fables", Parents' Magazine Press
