Kid Heroes With Adult Sidekicks
« on: February 13, 2021, 06:30:56 PM »

I was reading up on the original Star Spangled Kid and read how he is one of the earliest characters to be the main hero with an adult as a sidekick. Obviously we usually get Batman and Robin types but not very often do you see it reversed with a kid hero and an adult sidekick who answers to them.

Does anybody know of any more examples like this?

In the Spanish version of Batman - unauthorised - It's Robin who is the main character.  The series is called Robin y el Murcielago (Robin and the Bat) and has Robin wielding and using a machine gun and other weird and wonderful stuff, with Batman, or The Bat, as more of a secondary character.

Ah no way! That is crazy! It?s not often you see Batman take a back seat regardless of what version it is

I don't know of any kid superhero with a NON-superhero or less super hero sidekick.  But, Fox Features, in the late 1940s, teamed up their diaper-wearing baby superhero with their adult, funny animal superhero, Cosmo Cat, in an adventure in which Cosmo helped Tommy out in defeating a villain, with Tommy driving the action:

While I don?t think he was meant to be a sidekick, the Black Owl being referred to as secondary after Yank and Doodle gave that impression.

MY first response to this was, no, I can't think of any. But just now I was looking at DC's one=-off 6 issue Son of Vulcan series. Son of Vulcan was one of the the Charlton Heroes they did almost nothing with.
That's hardly surprising, since the original Charlton Character was the subject of some of the worst comics you have ever seen. They finally decided to update it, and the story is one of the more off-the-wall stories DC ever did. Actually its not bad, if they had continued with it, it might have been a good series. No spoilers - much - but it fitted into the DC Universe but at the same time it was somewhat farcical. BUT! the central character, the new Son of Vulcan, who is an Hispanic teenager, ends up with a sidekick who was an older Son of Vulcan, so much older that he is resident in a Nursing Home. Oh, and he has a high-tech rocket car and a female Robot/Cyborg. It always amazed me that apart from this 6 issue series, the character - to my knowledge - never appeared again in DC continuity. 'Written out', is an appropriate term.
But seek it out, its an enjoyable read.
Incidentally they had two attempts at Judomaster, the first was a young male who appeared in a one-off story and the second was a young female who appeared in JSA for a few issues.
But seek it out, its an enjoyable read.

Cheers!

I?ve never actually read many of these animal hero comics (beside Bucky O?Hare) but cheers for letting me know. I?ll have a look at a few

There also were two superhero characters called "Super Baby".  This one appeared in many issues of Timely's "Krazy Komics", and a few stray issues of other titles:

But, I haven't seen evidence that this diapered baby had a sidekick.
Bailey's one-shot Cisco Kid Comic book had a story with an almost identical character, named "Super-Baby", who had similar, red hair, and also wore a diaper.  But, he also had no sidekick:

There was also another superhero baby in Orbit's "Toyland Comics" - Upan Atom, who got his powers from eating radioactive jarred(canned) vegetables.  Amazingly, his parents had a large stock of radioactive vegetables stored in their food cabinets, - and didn't know that fact:

Unfortunately, like the other baby superheroes, Upan Atom had no sidekick.
