Lieutenant Commander Frank V. Martinek tasked with the problem
of naval recruitment turned to a character he had already used in
his novels. The idea was to create comics strips using Don Winslow to grab the
attention of American youth. Commercially Don Winslow was success appearing both on radio
and film. The strip was reprinted in comic books and in 1943
Fawcett launched the Don Winslow of the Navy title featuring original stories.
A must read is Undersea Agent. Davy Jones, a former navy lieutenant, joins an underwater research facility
built on Atlantis by Professor Weston. Davy and his side-kick Skooby Doolittle
do battle with Dr. Fang, conquerer of the the mer-folk.
A man of his times was Commander Battle. Along with a handful of crew
members (known as "The Atomic Commandos") and his Atomic Sub, he fought the red menace.
But not for long as his title only lasted 7 issues.
A really interesting and fun title is Riggin' Bill. It includes humorous letters and a guide to naval slang of the day.
We have 29 titles and 472 issues in our 'Water / Boats Category' for you to enjoy.
